Manchester City earned a penalty against Wolves following a collision involving Josko Gvardiol and Rayan Ait-Nouri, prompting Arsenal legend Ian Wright to express his outrage at the decision.
Ian Wright voiced his discontent over Manchester City’s first penalty against Wolves, much to the amusement of BBC Match of the Day host Gary Lineker. City’s 5-1 victory on Saturday, propelling them just a point behind league leaders Arsenal with a game in hand, saw Erling Haaland netting four goals, including one from the contentious penalty spot. Referee Craig Pawson adjudged Rayan Ait-Nouri to have fouled Josko Gvardiol, a decision that sparked controversy. Wolves manager Gary O’Neil labeled it a “terrible” call, expressing his frustration from the directors’ box due to a touchline ban. “The first penalty was a really poor decision,” he criticized post-match, emphasizing the game’s errors, including the contentious penalty award.
Wright then interjected, leaving both Lineker and fellow pundit Jermaine Jenas in stitches as the Arsenal legend fumed: “Absolutely. This could be one of the worst penalties I’ve ever seen given in the game.
“It’s getting more and more ridiculous. You got Ait-Nouri he’s turning and not looking, he makes contact with the ball and I don’t think he’s actually kicked him here at all Ait-Nouri.
“He’s actually already had his shot and he’s blasted into him, how can they look at that in there and say this is a penalty and he’s impeding him? Look, he’s had his shot, I’m bewildered.”
