Pictures have emerged of a Police officer from Bambalapitiya clinging to the door of a car as the driver attempts to flee during an incident which happened at Vajira Road, Bambalapitiya.The Police officer from the Bambalapitiya Traffic Unit is currently receiving treatment at National Hospital for injuries he sustained during the incident.
The car driver who caused the accident was arrested by Police within a few hours after the incident.
Police say that when the officer approached the vehicle and asked the driver for his driving license and extended his right hand inside the car, he simultaneously raised the side window and after the constable’s hand got stuck he had driven the vehicle towards Fonseka road.
Police say that the suspect, who had driven the car at high speed for about two hundred meters, intentionally turned it so that the officer had rammed into a car parked on the left side of the road.
The Police officer had fallen down and sustained injuries. At that time, the suspect kept driving his car and fled and was arrested a few hours later after surrendering to the police through a lawyer, a Police officer said.
The car he was driving was found in a parking lot near the Aluthkade Courts by Police. He is said to be a cab driver attached to a leading taxi chain.
The cab driver was remanded till January 8 after being produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate.
