Box Pleat Valance

By Heather @home_modern

I wanted to give you guys another post because I don’t want you to think that I’m just using my blog to hawk my stuff (although if you haven’t taken a look at these items I’m selling, please do–I need to move them along–to your house!)

My life right now consists of working like a maniac during the week at my job, then turning our dining room into a sewing sweat shop on the weekends. Now that I’m sewing again, it’s opened up a whole new world of being able to create what I want for the most part, rather than having to buy it. The bad news is that I basically now want to customize everything in the house. It might be a sickness. I finished the living room drapes and have now moved on to the den.

This is our current window treatment situation, which I DIYed by covering our existing bamboo shades. I like these but was wanting something more tailored and really want to make roman shades that are inset into the widow, rather than the ones you buy in the stores that just sit on top. I don’t know why this bothers me but it does. Plus, the yellow was kind of random and I’d like to highlight the pinks, reds and browns we have going on in the rug.

I already blogged about where I got this idea and a source for the fabric (I have the fabric in green as well that I’ll do a project with in our bedroom.)  I washed and dried the fabric once, using a dye catcher to prevent bleeding, in order to fade the fabric just a bit.

Once I laid out the fabric and decided how all the pleats would lay I lined it with a basic white linen I had left over from another project. I pinned, ironed and sewed all the pleats closed, then using my clear duct tape, taped it to a valance infrastructure I made out of foam core board (I love that stuff!).

The roman shades, which will be white, will basically start where the valance ends and be inset against the inside frame of the window.

Here are a couple of other fabrics that I’m making pillows out of to incorporate the brown and pink (our couch and sisel-esque rug under our pink and red rug are a light blue-ish gray).

Available on eBay here (I made a lumbar pillow out of it).

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
