There’s something magnetic about BØRNS and his groovy, anthemic, genre-spanning pop. Crafting songs filled with passion and spunk, LA’s Garrett Borns (aka BØRNS) hits ethereal highs in a quirky yet glamorous style on his Candy EP. We’ve been loving the slow-burning “10,000 Emerald Pools” since it was released back in October, and this new material is just as strong. “Electric Love” jumpstarts his latest release with an irresistible bassline and s choir of background vocals, making way for a melody that showcases the impressive range and signature style of Borns’ vocals. Almost two songs in one, “Past Lives” flows in on a harmonized vocal descent that turns immediately into a pulsating synth number as big as the tracks before it. The song continues his string of sanguine lyrics and oceanic love metaphors in sweeping melodic phrases, but this time mixed with layers of synth and syncopated backing vocals that would also seem fit in a Wham! track. Finishing with a bang, “Seeing Stars” is an addictive number, the poppiest of the bunch, with cascading verses and a bright chorus that will leave you seeing his stadium-filling star potential. The Candy EP is out now on Interscope — give it one listen and we’re sure it won’t be your last. Check out what we though of BØRNS live in our 10 Artists to Watch at CMJ post, too!
