Book Review: It’s Always the Heart by Arthur E. Constantine, M.D.

As a cardiologist, Dr. Constantine was trained to help patients navigate the treatment of the physical heart. Even so, early in his career, God revealed an insight not taught in any medical school or cardiology textbook that changed his approach to treating patients. He revealed there is an inseparable intertwining of the physical and spiritual bindings of our hearts.

There are millions of Christian and health books out there but none read like this book, It's Always the Heart, by Arthur E, Constantine, M.D. The good doctor tells us basically that we can't have a healthy physical heart if we don't have a healthy spiritual heart. That might sound trivial, but it really isn't. Dr. Constantine also addresses addictions in this book. Specifically he talks about how people will justify their addictions and will portray themselves as not battling an addiction when they have reduced their intake (of the drug, alcohol, nicotine, whatever), but if they search themselves, they will realize this just is getting them where God wants them to be because they haven't surrendered it to God. Dr. Constantine shows us where the Bible addresses each of our responsibility to take care of our bodies.

Body, mind and spirit are intricately connected; if any of the three is unhealthy, the person as a whole will be also be unwell. Spiritual health has been the least explored and emphasized in healthcare, yet, as Dr. Constantine has so clearly illustrated, it is the most important. We can eat the right diet, take all the right pills, and visit the gym every day, but without an open heart listening to God's presence and guidance in our lives, the rest is for naught.

This isn't just Dr. Constantine's opinion - this truth is supported by research. We don't hear about it because topics such as this aren't what we know as "newsworthy" in our world. In author Dr. Arthur Constantine's office alone, it occurs thousands of times a year. Men and women with ages ranging anywhere from thirty to ninety, and representing all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, religions, and occupations, await the doctor's entrance to investigate the cause of their symptoms. Some patients have risk factors for heart disease; some have experienced prior heart problems; and others have few or no reasons to worry about heart problems. In a surprising majority, the physical heart isn't the cause of trouble.

Whether or not it is the physical heart causing the symptoms, the spiritual heart must be addressed before complete healing can occur.

With equal measures of diet and exercise information and Bible-based inspiration, It's Always the Heart offers valuable, life-changing insights into the prevention of and recovery from heart disease from the clinical and spiritual points of view. Dr. Constantine provides the readers with ideas on how we can charge our hearts to receive the physical and spiritual hearts and the life God intended for us to have.
