My thoughts on Helping Boys Learn:
As the mother of four boys, this book was SO on target for our family! Everything that Dr. Dixon said rang true, especially for my 10-year-old twin boys. As the author notes, almost all of the behavioral “issues” at school are caused by boys, but when we understand why they are always fidgeting, horsing around, laughing, etc., and not focusing on the task at hand, we can tailor the teaching to take advantage of these qualities and get boys excited about learning. This book made me want to buy the Teacher Edition for every teacher in my boys’ school! It just really makes sense in explaining that boys aren’t necessarily naughty or uncooperative; they’re just not wired in the same way as girls. And since the majority of elementary school teachers are female, they often have a hard time understanding why boys don’t listen and cooperate as well as girls. Helping Boys Learn explains these problems and solutions in clear terms that will have every parent of boys nodding his or her head (and wishing that Dr. Dixon was their child’s teacher)! And Dr. Dixon goes beyond theory to give tips and ideas for parents to help optimize their son’s learning. Helping Boys Learn should be read by every parent and teacher of boys, and then implemented in the home and school. It’s groundbreaking.
