My rating: 1 of 5 stars
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
The story revolves around a girl named Kalli who is a runaway. She almost gets raped in a dark alley and is stabbed by her attacker. However, some mysterious guy named Ellis saves her and takes her to a clinic where she finds herself wondering just how she has been able to quickly recover from a stab wound to her stomach.
Because she has no place to go, she goes with Ellis and stays with him. She then finds out that Ellis, the doctor, and the doctor's aid are not who they seem. They have very scary secrets. They are aliens from another planet who have come to earth in search of women who can bear their young. And Kalli has been implanted with an embryo just like so many other women. Will Kalli be able to save herself? Is Ellis really going to help her or is he one of "them"?
I know that this book has won the Yummy but Brainy Writing Contest presented by CBAY Books within the Young Adults category but... here it comes... I have no idea how it could have won. Honestly, reading the book was a major chore and I find the story irritating to a large degree.
Note: Spoilers here...
Considering that Kalli was being abused at home by an aunt who has strange men enter Kalli's bedroom, Kalli is still a major idiot. Sorry but I just can't think of another word to describe her. She is walking along a dark alley with a young boy (after she runs away from home) and gets herself almost attacked. I can still accept that part of it. She almost gets raped, is stabbed, rescued by some stranger, gets healed by a really weird doctor with a much weirder assistant, and she decides to go with the stranger who saves her and lives with the guy in his house. I mean... really?
She could have just said "I can go on my own, thank you." Or have accepted Ellis offer to drive her to some diner and sneak out of there. But noooooooo.... she decides to shack up with her rescuer.

Then she finds out they are aliens and they implanted her with an embryo -- the Ellis guy is very much in on it -- and she decides she loves the alien anyway. (hide spoiler)]
The story was fine up to the part when Kalli decided to go with Ellis to his place. That part is when things start to go downhill. I do not understand why a girl who has been abused and nearly raped will decide to go with home with a guy
to some secluded place no matter if the guy saved her life. It makes no sense to me.And even if a girl does make that mistake, why would she not try to escape of leave after she finds signs of weird goings on. I mean Ellis gets upset when she steps out or uses the phone -- that is very obviously fishy.
I did not like this book though, I am sure, there may be a lot of people who may like it. To be perfectly frank, I regret reading it.
