Looking back at the most recent year of 2011, Bollywood did a lot of business which can be gauged by the fact that 8 releases that year ended up in the list of highest grossing Bollywood movies of all time. Included among these are movies like Bodyguard, Ready, Singham and Don 2. Ra.One, also included in this category, is a prime example of the star power that attracts people to pay money irrespective of what the movie is about and/or whether it has substance or not. Personally, I watched all these movies and I disliked all of them because it was filled with so many mistakes that the genre changed for me. If it was comedy, I found it hard to laugh at. If it was a romantic drama, I had to laugh at all the impossible things that were happening. Anyways, this is what makes Bollywood famous. Irrespective of the mistakes, people will crowd the cinema halls to watch their favorite movies stars in action against some oily, gelled up, moustache bearing antagonist.
Four movies in 2011 grossed more than 100 crore Rupees. This speaks a lot of the commercial success often encountered by Bollywood movies, illuminated by the fact that it was the first time ever it happened. And by the way Bollywood is not all about error stricken stuff, there are some wonderful movies too hell bent on topics that people rarely imagine like Zindagi na Milegi Dubara, Delhi Belly, The Dirty Picture and so on. These movies and much more like them will define the future of the Indian cinema and will also portray the maturity of the Indian audience if the commercial business remains as such.
Over the years, with the gradual change in the industry of Indian cinema, there has been profound seriousness seen in the way these films are made. Gone are the days when the Indian movies were cheap remakes or were a mixture of two or three Hollywood films. Not only the films, but the characters that an actor chooses has also become diverse unlike the old when we only saw Mr. Shahrukh Khan doing one dimensional character of some loser winning some girl through his glorified singing and dancing skills, or beating the hell out of some bad guy in front of a girl or fighting with her father for her hand (LOL). Storylines in Bollywood movies nowadays depicts a certain degree of professionalism which was absent in the past. It seems as if educated writers and directors are making movies now! Take a prime example of Kahani, a film starring Vidya Balan (The Dirty Picture), which is a portrayal of a pregnant woman in search for her husband in Kolkata. The story in itself seems simple enough, but the way in which it is presented to us is truly mystifying. It also sheds light on Vidya Balan’s talent as an actress after her sexually explicit role in TDP. The movie is a must see for everyone, for both lollygaggers and critics alike.
Another movie that caught my attention and made me believe that Bollywood was headed towards the right direction is Agneepath. This movie is a remake of a 1990 movie that starred Amitabh Bachchan. Reprising his role in the remake is Hrithik Roshan, who has wonderfully performed the role of a child whose father was lynched before his eyes and plots his revenge against those who killed his father. What was the factor that made me believe Bollywood is heading towards the right direction? Firstly because Bollywood sucked at making remakes and this movie turned that notion around (If anyone doubts my credentials go watch the remake of Sholay and you will understand), and secondly because it is even better than the original (and that itself is a complete rarity in Bollywood). Mr. Karan Malhotra has done a wonderful job as director to bring forth this wonderful movie about violence, action packed gore extravaganza while remaining true to the original!
A lot of other movies released this year have been on the same classical subject of Bollywood i.e Romantic-Comedies but with a different directorial touch such as Ek Main aur Ek Tu, London Paris New York, Ek Deewana Tha and countless others. Though it seems obvious that Hindi film makers will not want to drift away from their favorite genre, they have become wary of the demands of the newer public and have instilled a modern touch to their films. This has made them to expand their audience to different cultures which is definitely reaping its rewards.
Lastly worth mentioning are the movies that are to be released at some time this year which has really kept the public and cinema goers on their toes. Topping this list is Talaash, which is Reema Kagti’s second film after the success of her first movie Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. The movie stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukarji, a star cast that will definitely draw a crowd to fill the cinemas. This movie centers on a cop, a housewife and a prostitute who are entangled in a mystery that connects their lives in mysterious ways. The trailer itself is worth creating the suspense and hype surrounding the film which will definitely be one of the movies of the year. Hot on the heels is the movie Shanghai, starring Abhay Dheol, Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin and directed by Dibakar Banerjee from theLSD fame. It is definitely a movie worth watching, looking back at the commercial and critical success that LSD enjoyed, it may even be a surprise hit with the audience. Finally,Agent Vinod deserves mentioning. After the slamming of Ra.One by critics, this movie will define the Bollywood action genre as a whole. It casts Saif Ali Khan as Agent Vinod who goes on globe-trotting to find the mystery behind the murder of his colleague. The trailer itself looks slick hopefully the story will match that. All in all, this is surely going to be a pop corn flick and will rake in hefty bucks. Fingers crossed!
