If you’ve been following Mod31 at all, you’d know that my friend Jessica has been a regular here. What you may not know is that she is an amazingly talented musician and visual artist. Once she has a website set up, I will have to link you guys to it. I had such a fun photoshoot with her as she is so comfortable being goofy and silly in front of the camera. She has this captivating feature about her – ya know, one that makes you look twice and think “Where’d that girl come from??” That’s what I thought when I first heard her sing and it’s what I tried to capture in these photos. These images are a bit more artsy in an attempt to match her vibe.
I asked Jessica to sum up her style in her own words:
I don’t think there’s a concise way to describe my style. When it comes to my wardrobe I look for color or patterns, I choose clothes that are comfortable and flatter my figure, that are unique or have their own flare. I’m influenced by what’s trendy, mainly the indie look, but I try to veer in my own direction. I’m influenced by hipsters, hippies, bohemians, the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and the future…. Each day just depends on what I’m feeling. I could go vintage chic one day with a high waisted skirt and tucked in blouse, or I could go 90s beatnik with a black, sleek look. Some days I dress like a lumberjack (I love flannel and plaid) and other days I’ll wear a flowy, feminine, flowery frock. It just depends.
After reading Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli in 7th grade, I decided to wear all kinds of mismatched, cross-patterned outfits and I dyed my hair blue. Now I still incorporate my own eclectic vibe. When it comes to fashion I like what Jesus has to say about it all, “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” (Matthew 6: 25).
Stylistically, she’s not one to “play it safe.” And I love that. How does your style express who you are to the world?
