This Stearman, ‘The ‘Spirit of Tuskegee’, was purchased in a 2005 auction as a restoration project, then it was determined that this aircraft had actually been used to train Tuskegee Airmen at Moton Field, in Tuskegee, Alabama. The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture acquired the aircraft in 2011. This is one of two known remaining PT-17s used to train Tuskegee pilots, the other is part of the Collings Foundation collection. First flown in 1934, more than 10,000 of these training aircraft would be produced in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Fuji X-E2s w/18-55mm.
