A B-52H Stratofortress of the 2nd Bomb Wing, USAF Global Strike Command makes an appearance at the Kaneohe Bay Airshow, having flown all the way from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. First flown in 1952, this iconic warplane is expected to serve into the 2040s.  Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept the B-52 in service despite the advent of newer, more advanced aircraft.  As of 2024, 76 of the original 744 B-52 aircraft were operational in the U.S. Air Force. The current modernization effort to re-engine the B-52 fleet began in 2021, B-52Hs upgraded with Rolls Royce F130 engines will be redesignated “B-52J”.
