This 717 is almost done retracting its gear as it climbs out after takeoff, headed to one of the neighbor islands. Their B717s and B767s are named after birds, in this case ʻAkepa ( a forest bird). Hawaiian operates 19 of these aircraft, servicing interisland travel. The Boeing 717 airliner was designed and originally marketed by McDonnell Douglas as the MD-95, a derivative of the DC-9 family, prior to their 1997 merger.
