Bobby Bonilla’s NFT Compensation Deal with the Mets Sells for $180,000

Bobby Bonilla, a former MLB All-Star who is now getting a big payout from his old team, the New York Mets, has made more money by turning his physical contract into an NFT. The auction was held on August 6 on the NFT marketplace Goldin, and the winning bid was worth $180,000.

Aside from the historic contract and the 1/1 Bobby Bonilla NFT that comes with it, the single winner will also get a 30-minute Zoom chat with the player and the agent who set up the huge deal, Dennis Gilbert. They’ll get an autographed baseball, a bat that Bonilla used in a game, and a day trip to New York where they’ll take batting practice, watch a Mets game, and eat with Bonilla.

In the deal in question, the Mets agreed to pay Bonilla $1.19 million every year from 2011 until 2035, for a total of $28.8 million, instead of giving him the $5.9 million he was owed. Since annual payouts usually happen on July 1, baseball fans call that day “Bobby Bonilla Day.”

With these huge amounts already in play, it’s likely that Bonilla’s NFT earnings won’t make a big difference in his life, so it’ll be interesting to see what the former All-Star does with the money.
