Introducing the two reads sent to me by the lovely Amy as part of Rosie's fabulous #bloggerbookswap - oh how I'm chuffed! For those of you who didn't catch it, Rosie organised a huge book swapping event for bloggers where you are matched with another blogger and given the challenge of choosing a couple of books from a local charity shop to post to your partner. Now, its a tricky task as you may not have followed that persons blog already, or know them online, so finding two books you think they'll like and hopefully haven't read is a toughie! Luckily, Amy got it spot on, I've not read neither of these and they both sound great. The Color Purple I've meant to buy for ages; I loved The Help, The Secret Life of Bees, Gone With The Wind and other novels about the position of Black Americans and civil rights in America. Obviously I've only just started this so don't know they story, but the internet gives me this brief synopsis; "Taking place mostly in rural Georgia, the story focuses on the life of women of color in the southern United States in the 1930s, addressing numerous issues including their exceedingly low position in American social culture". I'm only a few pages in so far and am already hooked! Great pick, well done Amy!And secondly, Sweet Tooth. I have to admit I've never read anything by Ian McEwan - Atonement, Chesil Beach and Enduring Love have been on my list for ages, but again I've never got round to buying them. Sweet Tooth has great reviews, which I'm too scared to read too much of in case of spoilers! Again, a one sentence introduction; "Serena Frome, the beautiful daughter of an Anglican bishop, has a brief affair with an older man during her final year at Cambridge, and finds herself being groomed for the intelligence service". Sounds intriguing, huh?What did I send Amy I hear you ask... well I sent two of my favorite 'must reads' of recent years - Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (review here) and The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The Help is one of my favorite novels of all-time, perhaps because I love Gone With The Wind so much, and this is almost from the opposing perspective of the 'help'. And Gone Girl is just a great psychological thriller and mind-f*ck of a read. Just what I like!What are you reading?
