ABC Film Challenge – Oscar Nomination – B – Black Panther Wakanda Forever – Movie Rob’s Pick
“Only the most broken people can be great leaders.” – Namor
Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Feb 2023)
Brief Synopsis – Following the death of King T’Challa from a mysterious virus, Wakanda is without a leader and a new powerful threat from under the sea uses this opportunity to begin to cause problems in the world.
My Take on it – I was never the biggest fan of the first film in this series, yet was quite interested in seeing what they would do with the sequel especially given the tragic and unexpected death of Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman. This film does a nice job dealing with his death and still finding a way for the story to continue in a coherent and enjoyable way. The choice to use Namor as the new villain is an interesting one especially given the fact that in the comics, he wasn’t necessarily a villain, but rather an anti-hero. The thing that makes this film work best are the special effects which are amazing to watch because of the various elements that are used throughout (land, air and sea).
The way that they depict the future of Wakanda is done well and I’m quite curious to see where they will take things from here. Since Black Panther (2018) was the first MCU film to be nominated for Best Picture, it’s fitting that this film (it’s sequel) would be in the running for an Oscar. I can understand why Angela Bassett could win a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress Award and be the front runner for the Oscar in that category for her work here and I am among those thrilled that the MCU has finally broken through to the above the line films nominated at the Oscars and seems to finally have a real chance of taking home gold.
