Via ESPN: The blows for Buffalo Bills fans came in quick succession Tuesday night. First was a shocking 33-word statement from general manager Doug Whaley that sent a clear message: brace for the worst with linebacker Kiko Alonso, who quickly had become a fan favorite and rising defensive star last season. “We have learned tonight that Kiko Alonso injured his knee while working out in Oregon,” Whaley said. “We do not have the details at this point, but early indications are that it may be significant.” Less than an hour later came confirmation, from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, of Bills’ fans fears:Alonso had torn his ACL and is expected to miss the upcoming season.
Blerg.
Talk about a shot to the gut for Bills fans. This one is going to sting because we have to wait an entire year to watch this guy play again. Sure he can be replaced and the Bills will make sure they do everything possible to try to fill his void, but any time you lose a young, important piece to your team it’s hard to get over it.
The above article goes on to talk about the options the Bills have and they do have some, but replacing a guy who played every snap, led the team in tackles and was a revelation for a Bills defense which had been horrible in recent years is not going to be easy.
Let’s hope the offense has a little more in store for us than last year and Jim Schwartz can continue the improving trend of this teams’ defense. I’m not going anywhere Buffalo but DAMN we need to catch a break sooner than later.
