Bild to Ad Blockers: You Are Not Welcome

Germany’s Bild is a one of a kind newspaper. It is irreverent (when President Obama visited Berlin, the headline of the President and Chancellor Angela Merkel read: Kiss Me, Angie), it is a best seller (Europe’s top-selling tabloid and 265,000 digital subscribers at the end of June who pay €4.99 a month for full access to the tabloid’s online content).

It is now also a pioneer in the handling of those ad blockers who are making life miserable for publishers everywhere.

Axel Springer, publisher of Bild has banned readers who use ad blockers from its Bild tabloid website, stepping up a fight by publishers to stop online advertising revenues being eroded.

Here is the Axel Springer plan: visitors to the website of Bild will be asked to switch off the ad blocker or pay a monthly fee of €2.99 (£2.23) to browse the website mostly ad-free.

“Whoever does not switch off the ad blocker or does not pay cannot see any content on Bild.de, as of now,” the publisher said in a statement.

Internal monitoring showed that about 23% of Bild.de vistors use ad blocking software. In previous years that was about 20%.

I am sure publishers around the globe are taking note of Axel Springer’s actions!
