The Des Moines Register has released its first poll on the 2020 primary race for president among Democrats. The Des Moines Register / CNN / Mediacom Poll was done between December 10th and 13th of 455 Democrats that are likely to attend the caucus. The margin of error is 4.6 points.
There has been a lot of talk on cable news about how the Democrats need to nominate a new face, but Iowa respondents disagreed with that. About half (49%) said they wanted a seasoned politician to take on Trump, while 36% wanted a newcomer.
And that showed in how the poll came out. Joe Biden finished on top with 32% and Bernie Sanders was second with 19%. The only other candidate to get double-digits was Beto O'Rourke with 11%.
The second tier of candidates included Elizabeth Warren (8%), Kamala Harris (5%), Cory Booker (4%), Amy Klobuchar (3%), and Michael Bloomberg (3%). About 14% were unsure or wanted someone else.
