Bergdorf Goodman Celebrates “Holidays on Ice” This Christmas

Yesterday ,November 19 was the presentation of the new Bergdorf Goodman windows for Christmas 2013,Holidays on Ice“ where the following holidays were portrayed on ice: Arbor Day, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, April Fool’s Day, and the Fourth of July. Bergdorf Goodman’s Senior Director of Visual Presentation, David Hoey said: “We sought a deceptively simple theme, and added a surprise. “Holidays on Ice” will give equal billing to a year’s worth of holidays—not only the wintry ones. All of them will be icebound. Even the Fourth of July.”

Each year, designers and decorators of the legendary department store surprise  New Yorkers strolling down Fifth Avenue with the magic world that happens behind the glass. The installation of 2013 is one of the most ambitious works in the history of Bergdorf Goodman.

This year, the challenge for the Bergdorf Goodman team was how to imitate the look of ice, said Mr. Hoey and Shane Ruth, the store’s visual manager. They decided to contract artisans, who worked with polyresin to achieve the effect. Another stumper: how to recreate the Vanderbilt Mansion as a 9-foot structure, glazing it as if it had endured an ice storm and then outfitting it on a mannequin for a Halloween display. - online.wsj.com
