Benefits of Blogging, AFT Version

Posted on the 25 November 2013 by Michael Lin @mlin427

The other day I published my 50th post of my short blogging career, which led me to think, “What has blogging meant to me thus far?” It’s only been a few months, but ever since the birth of America’s Finest Tiger, things have certainly changed for the better.

  1. Growing my network: From all my life experiences thus far, a common theme has surfaced: it’s all about the people. From college to tennis to work to family, life is all about the people you meet and know. The blogging world has provided me with another batch of new connections, a way to meet other people that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. And as an added bonus, people with similar interests and similar backgrounds, leading me to new perspectives and new realizations. As the saying goes, it’s not about what you know, but who you know.
  2. A different avenue of expressing my thoughts: Everyone has their own way of expressing their feelings, thoughts, emotions, blah blah blah. But in all seriousness, words can be powerful, and writing can be a great way to share opinions that otherwise you may not have done person-to-person, or in music, or in another way. I’ve found that blogging has definitely helped me be more comfortable sharing my personal experiences, things I have learned, and stuff that I’m very passionate about, such as college, tennis, sports, Whose Line, and more.
  3. Discovering a potential career interest: Blogging has turned out to be a hidden gem of sorts, with regards to my career interests. More specifically, I’ve come to enjoy writing every now and then, both in short-order and long-order form. Which is why I’ve certainly am trying to head into the social media/writing/creative realm of marketing. Whether or not it turns out that way, there’s not doubt in my mind that I’ve discovered a new interest that has been a positive both personally and career-wise.
  4. Another social media obsession: I, as many of you are, am a social media “enthusiast.” I’m not saying I’m on every network possible because I’m not, but I consider myself somewhat of an addict when it comes to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, among others. And now blogging. For some reason, right when I started this blog, I treated it as another social platform. I monitored it constantly, tried to improve its layout and design, and made it as appealing as possible. Of course, maintaining a blog takes a lot more effort and time, but I view it as just expressing myself through long-order writing rather than 140 characters, a status update, or a filtered photo.

I know I’ve written a post similar to this one before, but I just wanted to sort of reiterate what I said then and add a few new things. The 50 post milestone made me do it.

Here’s to another great week ahead of us.

Cheers
