Just after LG’s announcement on their upcoming flexible display plans, Samsung has just went ahead and unveiled their curved device. Samsung Galaxy Round is the first smartphone to feature a curved display. According to Samsung, this phone was “made with the world’s first commercialized full HD Super AMOLED flexible display”

Main selling point of the device is the 5.7-inch curved Full HD display with 7.9mm thick body. Even though, this basically looks like a Galaxy Note 3 with a curved display, the company says this phone allows users to grip the device better than others. Would be a great choice for people with butter fingers. It also offers some unique features like the “Roll Effect”, which allows users to check notifications even when the home screen is off. You can check that out in the video.

“With this pioneering curved display technology, GALAXY ROUND blends the latest smartphone screen innovations with unique design features,” Samsung wrote on their blog. “As a result of its unique curved design, users can take advantage of round integration experiences like the Roll Effect, the Gravity Effect and the Bounce UX.” Allowing users to create visual interaction with the screen and control their music with just tap on the side of the device.

So, why the curve? Well, the best use of this new feature is that it will protect the display of the smartphone, even when you drop the phone on the ground. Although, it won’t be the same when you put it in your back pocket.

Samsung Galaxy Round heads out in South Korea starting October 10.
