I first painted the background on this new abstract floral with a pale greenish-blue and let it dry. Then I chose brilliant purple and cadmium light as the main colors for the five large flowers I would paint. I decided to begin with the purple on top, though typically I'd use the lighter color near the top of a canvas. In this case I didn't want the yellow to be overwhelming.
I brushed in the first petal shapes, and then began to add highlights in other colors. For the purple flowers, I used a grayish plum, cadmium red deep and white. For the yellow flowers, I used white and yellow oxide. I also added center buds of yellow in the purple flowers and orange in the yellow flowers.
I toned down the center buds by blending in other colors, and then painted vines and leaves in the background. Tomorrow I will continue working on this.
