Every morning Christine wakes up with no clue what has happened in the past 20 years. Her husband must tell her the same story every morning and try to help make her understand.
It takes quite a lot out of you to begin with as the days all merge into one as she tries to remember and goes through the same routine everyday. Along with a call from Dr. Nasch a psychiatrist who has tried to help Christine, along with recording each day’s findings on a camera to watch back so she can remember different things quicker.
It does well to keep you on edge at times and guessing who actually was involved in the accident which lead to the memory loss for Christine. As we quickly see that it was not a car crash like “Ben” her husband claimed. If he is indeed Ben. That is something that does not feel right at all from the start.
Each day she has flashbacks as well to different memories and people who she must have known in the past. Claire is someone who is brought up quite a few times. When confronting “Ben” about different things his answers don’t always seem to add up and he gets creepier as the story goes on. But you doubt Dr. Nasch as well, because if Ben does not know about him how was that possible?
It does have a pretty decent twist at the end in what actually happened, but it did link to probably the very first flashback about her accident. But on the whole some of the moments are predictable and nothing we haven’t seen on-screen before. I think the performances keep you interested in Kidman, Firth and Strong that is a good strength of cast. Baring in mind that is nearly the whole cast with the exception of three more characters anyone else is just an extra.
I like that type of film as it just shows that you don’t need to have a massive amount of characters for a story to work. It does make you wonder how it must be to deal with waking up and not knowing anything about yourself past a certain date. Imagine being 40 years old and still thinking your 20!
It is a bit of a different style of role for Firth and he just show some good range taking on that character. As always Strong in a supporting role is fantastic, honestly he is such an underrated actor always gets it spot on. Kidman while I am not her biggest fan is good at holding a film on her own at times and puts in a very steady performance.
