For this year's Spring Break boondoggle, we headed out to Las Vegas for a few days and then ventured up to Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah. After a hard day of clamoring up and over natural obstacles, we stopped at Zion Pizza & Noodle for well, um, pizza and noodles. While Benita, The Urchins, and my In-Laws (what's a trip to Vegas without a carload full of family?) ordered their pizzas and a trough of soda, I opted for a slightly higher octane beverage to go with the house special (chicken parmesan over a bed of linguine with a light cream sauce). After all of that walking, I was in need of a lubricant so I had to get a beer, you know, for medicinal purposes only.
Since we were in the land of Big Love, and since I'm just a tourist at heart, I fell victim to the pretty sign in the above photo and ordered a Polygamy Porter. This beer is produced by Wasatch Brewery of Salt Lake City Utah. Wasatch, founded by Greg Schirf in 1986, was the first brewery in Utah and operates two brew pubs (one in Park City and one in Salt Lake City) in addition to producing a lineup of 13 beers. Today, Wasatch Brewery is a partner with the Squatters Craft Beers in the Utah Brewers Cooperative.
Before we begin the review, here's what Wasatch has to say about the Polygamy Porter:
Why have just one? Polygamy Porter is a smooth, chocolately, easy-drinkin' brown porter that's more than a little naughty. Take some home to the wives! And, now for the review...
-
Appearance: Pitch black with minimal foam but good retention.
-
ABV: 4%
-
Aroma: A little doughy (wet bread) with a hint of coffee.
-
Taste: A little thin (watery) with hints of copper, hops and coffee. Baker's chocolate comes through mid-palate with only the slightest bitterness in the finish.
The Verdict
I'm a big fan of stouts and porter so I was really looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, it was a little bit like a thin chocolate syrup with just the slightest "beer" notes. Not particularly interesting but not bad either.
