Beer Review – Green Flash Double Stout

By Boozedancing @boozedancing

Whenever someone mentions Green Flash Brewing, I think aggressively hopped beer. While putting together a mixed six pack of beers during a recent visit to Wine Works in Marlton, NJ, I stumbled upon a bottle of their Double Stout. Since Green Flash has yet to let me down, I was curious to see what they could do with this beer style.

Here’s what Green Flash has to say about this beer:

Golden naked oats mashed with dark crystal and robust roasted malts create a luscious black brew with satin smooth finish. An old-world style, done the Green Flash way. Big, bold, flavorful and complex.

Here are my impressions of this beer…

  • Appearance: Talk about a spectacular pour! Deep, dark mahogany. Thick, fluffy, khaki foam. Excellent head retention. Lots of sticky lacing.
  • Aroma: Dark chocolate. French roast coffee. Hints of licorice.
  • Taste: Moderate carbonation. Medium bodied. Smooth and somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Lots of mellow chocolate and coffee notes from beginning to end. Soothing, mildly bitter aftertaste.
  • ABV: 8.8%

Since I am a huge fan of the Green Flash West Coast IPA and their Hop Head Red, I was tingling with anticipation to try this beer. In case you couldn’t tell from my tasting notes, Green Flash did not disappoint me. Their Double Stout is one seriously delicious beer! I found this to be a smooth, creamy, and very easy drinking ale. While you can definitely tell that it has a relatively high alcohol content, it’s not excessively boozy, i.e. the alcohol is there, but it’s never overbearing. I highly recommend this beer.
