Beer Review – Arrogant Brewing Company Who You Callin’ Wussie Pilsner

By Boozedancing @boozedancing

Ever the dutiful son, G-LO pays a visit to his Mamma in South Philly on a weekly basis. Not too far away from her house is a great bottle shop ( Beer Heaven). So, while playing his role as the ever dutiful son, he can also stop off and pick up the latest and greatest offerings from the Craft Beer continuum.

A while back, he stopped and picked up the latest release from Arrogant Brewing, the Wussie Pilsner. Truth be told, I'm not much of Pilsner fan. Sure it has its time and its place (i.e. a really hot day, ice cold, thirst quenching) but I'd really rather have a Stout or a Porter. Arrogant Brewing, as a bold and brash brewer, has taken this style and pumped it up with a bit of oomph. This is a Northern German Pilsner (so there are big flavors and added hops), but the alcohol is migrating dangerously close to an Imperial Pilsner.

Here's what Arrogant Bastard has to say about their Wussie...For far too long the tyrannical industrialized beer overlords have disgraced and cheapened the noble heritage of the pilsner with their relentless multi-generational downward drive to commercialized homogenization. Over decades, this once vaulted style has been slowly and methodically gutted, bringing forth a soulless and anemic result, all the while spending billions in advertising to convince the unwitting public that their fizzy yellow end result was beer. Well, I will not have it. We are striking back for true craft by stealing the pilsner back from their evil clutches, and restoring it to its almighty glory. They do it cheaply. We do it right. Choose vapidity, or choose righteousness...but whatever you do, choose wisely.

And here are my impressions of this beer...

  • Appearance: Nice pour of golden haze with an almost meringue foam and great lacing
  • Aroma: Pine and hand soap with a little malt.
  • Taste: Medium mouthfeel; a little fizzy. Crisp and refreshing with a nice mix of flavors (malt, citrus and hops) without being too much like pine resin. There is a mild sharpness in a longish finish.
  • ABV: 5.8%

The Verdict

This is really nice take on what I find to be a bit of a meh style. To me, a Pilsner is typically a lawnmower beer. This Northern German Pilsner pumps up the flavors and the ABV without making it too boozy or trying to make it into an IPA. All that's left to say is, "Well done!".
