Amid the beauty of Charleston, not all is as it seems. When her husband Liam is killed by a car bomb while their Celtic band is on tour in Charleston, singer and Irish beauty Alanna doesn’t quite know where to turn. Her father-in-law is threatening to take custody of the baby she carries, but Alanna knows she can’t lose the only piece of Liam she has left. Alanna’s manager offers her a marriage of convenience to obtain U.S. citizenship and allow her to escape her father-in-law’s control. It seems like the perfect solution until she arrives at the family home of her new husband—a decaying mansion with more questions than answers. Strange things begin happening that threaten Alanna’s life and the life of her child. Are they merely coincidences? Or is something more sinister at work? A mysterious painting, a haunting melody, and a love stronger than death leave Alanna questioning where darkness ends and light begins.
Hi everyone! I’m doing a little catching up today and I have so many books that my mom and I have read but I haven’t taken the time to report on. As part of the Fiction Guild Elite Reader program, I’m often given some pretty amazing books to read and share with my readers.
My mom was pretty caught up on her books, so I sent her today’s book, Because You’re Mine by Colleen Coble. I knew she’d enjoy it having read other Colleen Coble books myself – and I was right! I’ll be reading it when I get it back from mom, but in the meantime, here’s what Gloria had to say:
“Alanna Connolly an Irish beauty is married to Liam Connolly and she sings and plays a fiddle and her husband Liam plays percussion instruments in the Ceol band. Alanna’s Celtic band included Ciara, Fiona, and Ena. Alanna is 4 months pregnant, but they have not shared their good news with their parents. As the novel begins the band was on tour in America. After performing to a sellout crowd at the Hibernian Hall in Charleston, S.C. Liam meets up with his old friend Jesse Hawthorne from his college day they leave in Jesse’s new yellow sport car. Alanna and her bandmates got into their van.
Disaster strikes an explosion, Alanna saw smoke, ran from the van to where she saw flames from Jesse’s car. She knew that no one could survive. Jesse does survives but suffers several major surgeries and insomnia.
Returning to Ireland for Liam’s funeral she visited his parents and shared with them that she was expecting Liam’s child. Her father-in-law threatens to take custody of her baby. She has to protect her child as it is the only piece of Liam she has left. Her manager, Barry, is an attorney offered her a lifeline with a marriage of convenience to protect both her and the baby so she could obtain U.S. citizenship.
What Alanna did not know was the world she was about to enter was worse and filled with a lot of questions. Barry Kavanagh’s estate desperate need of repairs in Charleston, S.C. gave me the creeps, the dark description of the location of the old historic mansion with locked rooms, the swamps, the smells, Pete the pet alligator, and the missing cats and dogs. Threatening the life of Alanna and her child, there were so many unexpected events and they are beginning to become more dangerous, it kept you turning page after page to hurry and learn more.
This book is filled with strange happenings, mystery, suspense, romance, shock, and a feeling that you have escaped from the real world. At least it made me feel that way. I enjoyed the Irish language and the Celtic music. This is the first book I have read by Colleen Coble and now I am looking forward to my next one.”
