Barley Drink and Liebster Blog Award

By Cosybites @cosybites

Barley drink is a drink commonly sold in drinks stalls in Singapore and can be served warm or cold. Because barley drink is everywhere and is extremely easy to prepare, I took it for granted that everyone knows this drink and how to prepare it. Apparently not.

Don’t let its plain look fool you. Barley drink is very good for your body and health. Like green bean soup, barley drink can help to reduce your body’s internal heat. I make it for the family every time we start to get a little sore throat or cough. Besides the ability to cool the body, barley is also very low in calories, if you go easy on the sugar of course.

I’ve tried using barley I bought from Singapore and here in Dubai (which is imported from UK) and noticed that the barley from UK gives the drink a pinkish color but otherwise taste the same.

Here’s the recipe for barley drink. Enjoy!

BARLEY DRINK
Serves 3

Ingredients:

  • 80 gram barley
  • 1300 ml water
  • 30 gram winter melon strips (to taste, optional)
  • 15 gram rock sugar (to taste, you will need more if you are not adding winter melon strips)

Method:

  1. Wash barley and drain well.
  2. Add barley, water and winter melon strips into a pot. Bring to boil.
  3. Lower heat and add rock sugar. Leave to simmer until barley is softened, around 20-25 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat. Barley drink may be served hot or cold.
  5. You can also stir in lemon juice to make lemon barley drink.
