Barbie in Full PC Mode: There is Now a Lesbian Barbie

Because “Diversity is crucial“…or something like that.

New line of “diverse” Barbies

Mattel, the manufacturer of Barbie, recently added new dolls in three body types: curvy, petite and tall. They announced the following:

“Girls everywhere now have infinitely more ways to play out their stories and spark their imaginations through Barbie. Along with more overall diversity, we proudly add three new body types to our line.

This is just the beginning. From offering products that feature more empowering and imaginative roles to partnering with best in class role models, we believe in girls and their limitless potential. #YouCanBeAnything”

And the latest, more “empowering” Barbie? One of lesbian soccer player (retired) Abby Wambach. If (like me) you don’t follow women’s soccer, she is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and FIFA Women’s World Cup champion. She is married to Sarah Huffman. And she supports Hillary Clinton.

People Magazine reports that the official Abby Wambach Barbie doll was unveiled at The Makers Conference in California on Wednesday, honoring the longtime member of and recent retiree from the United States women’s national soccer team.

“At Barbie we believe that if she can see it, she can be it,” Kim Culmone, Vice President of Barbie Global said during the conference while unveiling the doll. She added, “Makers and Barbie are really, really thrilled to honor an extraordinary ‘shero,’ who has elevated and redefined what’s possible for women through her own effort, her bravery and her accomplishments.”

“I’m not gonna lie, you guys may not believe this, I was a Barbie kid… I played with Barbies my whole life,” the 35-year-old told the audience. She continued, “Playing with Barbies that may or may not have looked like myself growing up, I think this is a really impactful statement… it just proves that we really are getting somewhere… if you’re out there and maybe your doll doesn’t look exactly like you feel, here’s another option.”
