Bangkok Culinary Trail: 1823 Tea Lounge by Ronnefeldt

By Thelostboylloyd @lloydthelostboy

Bangkok is big on afternoon tea that many tea salons, patisseries, and cafes have sprung up over the past couple of years. One of the more recent ones is 1823 Tea Lounge by Ronnefeldt, which has been garnering plenty of raves online despite being in business only a few months ago. I went to Gaysorn Plaza one afternoon and checked it out myself. Read more…

THE RESTAURANT

1823 Tea Lounge by Ronnefeldt owes its name to the year in which Ronnefeldt, a world-famouse tea brand based in Germany, was established. The tea lounge is the first and only one of its kind in the world, and it remains to be the only place in Thailand to offer the Ronnefeldt tea collections in their entirety.

The tea lounge, as one would’ve guesssed, is elegantly ornate. Surfaces in gold and marble, as well as wooden furnishings, dominate the place, giving that classy, upmarket appeal.

THE MENU

Signature afternoon tea sets are, of course, the star of the menu, and the tea lounge offers three kinds: Gold Indulgence, Signature, and interestingly, Fashion. These are to be washed down with one of Ronnefeldt’s classic tea selections or one of their variants exclusively blended for the tea lounge: the Bangkok Blend and the Gaysorn Blend.

On offer as well are a selection of gourmet food: salads, pasta dishes, grilled sandwiches, fresh pastries, cakes, chocolates, and tea-infused macarons, among others.

OUR FAVORITES

From the 1823 Gold Indulgence Afternoon Tea Set, what stood out for me among the savories were the pan-fried foie gras with caramelized peach and the prawn bruschetta with German mustard and golden salmon roe—both of which were incredibly tasty. As for the sweets, I loved their variety of macarons, which, to me, had the right level of sweetness.

Also delicious was the earthy chicken Penne pasta, which was tossed in a mix of a delicate red wine sauce, low fat cream, herbs, and mushroom then topped with slow roasted chicken breast and a generous slab of foie gras.

From their tea selection, I loved their Gaysorn Blend, which is light and flowery Pai Mu Tan white tea from China with tropical flavors of ripe mango and a hint of citrus.

VALUE FOR MONEY

Despite the luxurious ambiance and the quality of both food and tea, prices at 1823 Tea Lounge by Ronnefeldt are surprisingly affordable.
