Only Real is a bit of a conundrum. He calls his music “Baby music made for babies,” which kind of undersells himself a little bit. One reviewer remarked that it’s actually more like guitar music for people that don’t like guitars. Which I’d probably agree with.
Think rough, unrefined vocals with a hint of soul and Jamie T rap lines if he smoked a helluva lot more. Then mash it all together with something like Blood Oranges (the band not the fruit, that would be ridiculous) and you’re heading along the right lines. It’s a chilled out yet highly compelling vibe that I imagine would be a stoners wet dream. Truthfully, it all sounds a bit unrehearsed, although I mean this in the best way. In the same way that Girls sounded like you’d just stumbled into their rehearsal room and caught a rough cut, we might as well be sat in Only Real’s bedroom listening to the genesis recordings of something great and that’s pretty exciting I think.
