#BabyAJ: 2-Year-Old Denied Kidney Over Father’s Arrest Gets Transplant From New Donor

Baby AJ Gets Kidney Transplant
A Thanksgiving miracle recently took place and a prolonged battle over a kidney transplant for a two-year-old is over. AJ Burgess a.k.a Baby AJ received a new kidney Wednesday after his original October surgery was delayed.
According to CNN, AJ’s father Anthony Dickerson, a perfect donor match, was set to donate of his kidneys to his son but he violated his parole and was arrested. Atlanta’s Emory hospital canceled the surgery and asked for proof that Dickerson had complied with parole for 90 days, effectively postponing the baby’s transplant until January.
There were concerns that the baby who was born prematurely without kidneys wouldn’t be able to survive that long, but luckily AJ’s family got a life-changing phone call the day before Thanksgiving.
“The transplant team contacted them and said, ‘We have a kidney,’ so they scrambled down here for the last-minute tests that had to be done,” said family attorney Muwali Davis. “The family arrived about 5 a.m. for those tests, and the transplant team took baby AJ back at 7:30 a.m.”
“This is an unexpected Thanksgiving miracle, to watch this child that no one expected to live, and now for him to have a chance at a healthy life, it’s unbelievable.”
Great news for baby AJ. We wish him a speedy recovery and a long and healthy life.
