On March 15, 1932, Maia’s railway station (originally Barreiros railway station) was inaugurated as part of the Guimarães line between Senhora da Hora and Trofa. In 2001, this part of the line was deactivated when Metro do Porto built a new track through Maia centre, which effectively decommissioned Maia’s little train station. These azulejos have seldom been seen since so I photographed them, 15 years later, to give them some love…

Portugal has many decommissioned train stations, some of them decorated with azulejos like this that could use more exposure (or they’ll fall into further neglect). This is definitely a long-term project.
