Holidays in Austria are about so much more than snow and ski. For example, take a day trip out to the frozen falls of Krimml - it’s a sight everyone should see!
Pinzgauer Lokalbahn and The Torchlight Treat
Every Thursday from December to mid-March, the pretty and impressive Pinzgauer Lokalbahn mountain railway (a narrow gauge railway) takes an exclusive group of visitors to enjoy a torchlight treat at the Krimml Waterfalls. For an all-inclusive price, a limited number of lucky people have the experience of a night-time on the mountainside.
Tickets can be bought on the train for this nocturnal adventure – but best to book ahead by contacting the Customer Centre at (no, not Krimml !) Mittersill, or better still try here for train times and ticket prices.
This tourists treat leaves from the Krimml clock in Zell am See, Tirol, on its journey to one of nature’s annual exhibits – the frozen falls of Krimml – where ice -like snottite cloaks the mountainside and ice crystals form on the forest foliage. And yes, it’s freezing!
Hanke’s Restaurant
The pleasing PinzgauerLokalbahn people have thought of everything. And to help overcome the chill of Krimml they’ve partnered up with Hanke’s Restaurant right at the foot of the falls, so that their torchlight treat also includes a hearty Hanke’s winter warmer. Good food served with traditional Austrian entertainment – all in a secluded setting where the patrons pride themselves on using local produce and personally pamper their guests.
But if you’re visiting these wonderful waterfalls without the benefit of being on the ‘torchlight treat’, it’s best to look and book ahead. This must surely be one of the most romantic of diners’ delights and therefore under a lot of demand.
What could be more enchanting than to sit on the covered terrace at twilight, sipping speciality ‘suppe’ or a glass of tasty schnapps?
