A year later, I'm visiting my sister, and the iPhone lies broken and sad in a room. It might still work, somehow (I haven't checked), which may explain why it's still there and not in the trash, but you can't see anything through the cracked screen. You've got to hand it to Apple, though, for creating a device so strong that it doesn't break into a million pieces when it falls off a roller coaster, but only gets its screen cracked in about a million places. Apparently, my niece was at the point where the roller coaster was about to do a 360 flip when she saw Her Precious fall all the way down. At least on this round, it's Gravity: 1, Centrifugal force: 0.
And while I'm making fun of my young phone-obsessed niece for breaking her phone, I think we all know an adult who has damaged his or her phone somehow. After all, this thing, this really expensive thing, is always on us, and it lives on borrowed time.
Next time you spontaneously jump into an inviting pool, you may feel like less of a fool once you realize you had your phone inside your bathing suit pocket. Next time you have too much fun on your vacation, and forget to pick up the bag with your phone from the Tiki bar, you may remember that vacation fondly even if you never get that bag back. Next time you wake up realizing you've left your phone outside in the 110 degrees day, you may enjoy the rest of the day after all.
