#ASKAWAYFriday With Mrs AOK a Work in Progress

By Upliftingfam @upliftingfam

I started participating in #ASKAWAYFriday and I have enjoyed it. I love connecting with other bloggers and learning more about them. I wanted to participate in this blog hop because I don’t always share a ton of information about myself. I thought #ASKAWAYFriday was the perfect way for everyone to get to know me on a personal basis. For those who don’t know what #ASKAWAYFriday is, you exchange a set of 10 questions for another blogger to answer. Below are 10 questions that Mrs AOK asked me and I hope that you enjoy my answers.

This week I connected with Mrs AOK  at A Work in Progress. She is married and has three children. I love the name of her blog and can see why she choose it. As parents and individuals we area always a work in progress and constantly evolving. If we aren’t changing and adapting, then we aren’t continuously growing with knowledge, skills, ect. Please stop by and visit her blog, you won’t be disappointed.

  1.  Best thing about Texas?

I have lived in Texas most of my life and it is my home state. I love that there isn’t a state tax or tax on food. I lived in North Carolina for 8 years and don’t paying state, high property tax on cars, and taxes on food. Texas is full of opportunities and has a wide variety of areas from the panhandle, the beaches, central, east, and west Texas to choose from.

  1. Worst thing about Texas?

I am not a huge fan of driving on ice and in the Fort Worth/Dallas area we mostly get more ice than we do snow storms. This area of Texas usually isn’t prepared to handle the storms and people don’t know how to drive when its icy.

  1. When ordering a beverage do you ask for Coke or soda? And, is it really Dr. Pepper that you are asking for?

I always ask for Diet Dr Pepper when it is available. Our family is a Dr Pepper fan and rarely do you find coke in our house. In fact, this question made me think of my grandmother and grandpa, they always called soda “pop”. They would ask us if we wanted some “pop” to drink and she would pull out the cans of diet caffeine free coke. Sometimes we were lucky and she would have shasta or other flavored soda on hand. It is funny how everyone has their own terms for soda.

  1. Not only are we both from Texas, we were both young mothers. I had my daughter at 21 but everyone always thought I was 16. How did you move past the judgment & lack of confidence people had in a young mother?

I had my daughter at the age of 19 and I really didn’t have anyone judge me for having her young. I remember being a bit embarrassed at first for having her so young but now looking back it is nice be young while raising my kids. I have always trusted my gut when it comes to their medical needs and I always did what I felt was best for them. My daughter was born deaf so I had to make some pretty grown up decisions very quickly. Luckily, my sisters were born when I was 14 so I was able to help my mom and knew how much work kids were.

  1. In regard to motherhood, you have a great post on your blog “Can You Tell the Difference Between Baby Blues & Postpartum Depression” this is a must read for new mamas. I’ve started a #Motherhood Chat and PPD is one of the things we discussed this week, what tips would you give a new mother to take care of *herself*?

Being a new mother can be an overwhelming experience, after all it is a learning process for everyone. Once you add all of the hormone changes, lack of sleep, and barely having the time to care for your own needs can make you feel as if the walls are closing in one you. I always advise new mom’s to find a few minutes to care for themselves and don’t be afraid to ask for help, especially, if you are breastfeeding. If you think that you are suffering from PPD, make sure that you bring it up to your OB. There are medications that are safe for you to take to help you. Don’t be afraid of the stigma that comes with taking depression medication if you feel that you need it, its better to get help and be happy than it is to be depressed. Your baby can sense your depression and i can make caring for a baby harder than it has to be.

  1. You have quite a few recipes on your blog, if I came over for coffee and dessert what would you make or buy?

I would buy a cheesecake (it is one of my favorite desserts) and make some chocolate chip cookies.

  1. I see you’re quite the crocheter, what’s the best crocheted item you’ve made? [picture?]

I have given away most of the master pieces that I have made over the years. The Heart Warming Fans Afghanis my favorite blanket to make. I tried making some stuffed animals and that didn’t go so well. I might try again in the future, since I can read patterns better than I can when I tired making a stuffed animal.

  1. I used a home preschool program my kiddos, I love that you share tips on your blog about pre-schooling at home. Where do you find inspiration?

I had a general idea how my son’s daycare was teaching him and when we pulled him out of daycare last September, I really wanted to make sure that he didn’t lose the skills that he already learned. I love finding fun ideas because it keeps my son’s attention.

  1. If you could interview one celebrity for your blog, who would it be and why?

I would love to interview Reese Witherspoon. I loved the movie First 50 dates and would love to find out how she felt knowing that she suffered from that awful condition and how it affected her ability to be a successful parent. I realize that it was a movie and it wasn’t a real disease but as a mom, she should be able to know how a chronic medical condition would affect raising children.

  1. My daughter wants me to ask you… what’s your favorite color, but I’ll make it more fun. If *you* were a crayon what color would you be and why?

My favorite color is purple so I would go with the Razzmic Berry. I also love Midnight blue, Plum, Forrest Green, Gel FX Slate, Blue Green, and Teal. I had no clue that they had so many color choices today. I always loved the big box of 64 colors growing up.
