Àsgeir has been on our radar for a few weeks now, but it looks like iTunes had him higher up their to do list. Hailing from Iceland, only 21 years old and already a hit at home. To the extent that we’ve discovered that 10% of Icelanders own his debut album, ’Dyrd í dauðathogn’. To you and me that’s ‘In The Silence’, which was released in it’s English translation on January 27th.
Àsgeir is also known for his beautiful cover version of ‘Wrecking Ball’ by Miley Cyrus. Performed here on Dutch national radio station 3FM earlier in January. For now let’s listen to ‘Torrent’…
Opening with a delicate piano chord structure it makes you think of falling snow. The piano becomes stronger and more brash, while still retaining it’s bell like quality, that is further enhanced by strong percussion.
Àsgeir’s vocals are haunting. They float, light as a feather, over the bright piano and the almost military percussion. Intensified by sustained power chords on the guitar, and underpinned by held notes on the bass, this makes for a powerful song. The likes of which you’d expect from the pivotal moment in a British Rom Com.
Àsgeir presents a wonderful piece that makes you think more of classical composition than modern popular music writing. Evoking strong emotional responses that has a tendency to leave you raw at the finish. It’s like being hit by that intense feeling of love for the first time. You’ll want more and you’ll want it now…
