The Benefits of Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy may be something new to a masseuse, but it's certainly not a new way to help heal the body. Dating back to the ancient Egyptians, natural oils as well as other plant substances, were added to a bath, a massage and used for healing things like congestion and stress.Today, this practice continues. Taking a page from the history books, many masseuses are turning to natural, chemical-free essential oils as a way to soothe, relax and de-stress their clients.
A massage in a professional environment
You can use these essential oils for your clients in several different ways. Many in the business like to put them in diffusers or oil burners and fill the room prior to the patient ever going in. This way the scent is in the air and the effects can take place within just a few minutes. As the oils permeate the air they caress the body by slowing down the constant thoughts that keep you from relaxing, This sends you into a happy place where the world seems a little bit easier to handle. They can also be applied topical or inhaled (best from a safe distance). A rigorous massage with these oils also helps to soothe and take the soreness from overworked muscles.
Home use of Natural Oils
On a personal level, if you were looking to do this yourself from the privacy of your home, you can. Most natural oils come in a concentrated state, meaning that you would need to dilute them for safe use. Many local and online retailers sell massage oils. The packaging will give you complete instructions for proper handling. Generally, you would blend them with another oil such as jojoba, olive or coconut oil. Some people put them lightly on their clothing or bedding to relax, while others simply apply the oils to their hands and breathe in the aroma. So long as you use the essential oils in their natural state, the benefits in most forms are the same.
Common essential oils often used
One of the more popular oils is Lavender. It has a soothing aroma and it's a great way to fight stress. As an added bonus, using a lavender oil also helps to fight the common cold and migraines. If you're feeling a little blue, try filling your burner with Jasmine. It has a sweet, uplifting smell that helps to defend off depression, reduce stress and respiratory problems. Cooling and refreshing, peppermint is a great way to give yourself a boost of energy. Lemongrass has the scent you love, clean. In addition to making you feel pure, it also helps to improve your level of concentration, improve your digestion and helps to reduce symptoms arthritis and heal acne. There are many others with wonderful benefits like rosemary, geranium and chamomile.
Live better and feel better
While aromatherapy may offer temporary relief to stress, depression and aches and pains, a healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables whole grains and lean meats, along with regular exercise, is beneficial to sustaining a happy and fulfilling life. Combine this with meditation and your aromatherapy and you'll be ready to tackle whatever life might send your way.
