Arizona Highlights: Chiricahua National Monument

Look at the picture above. Can you guess how the Chiricahua Apaches called this land?  They called it the "Land of the Standing-Up Rocks".  It is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.
These rock formations were created when Turkey Creek volcano erupted 27 million years ago.  Millions of years of erosion later, we are rewarded with a forest of thousands of these stone pinnacles.

It's strange that this place is not so well known in the U.S.. That's what I like like about national parks in the US, it's empty. I guess because they are all so vast.
