Emancipation Day (1862)
- On this day, the government declared it against the law to make the people or the descendants (the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren) of the people taken from Africa continue to work as slaves. In the United States, this day marks president Abraham Lincoln's announcement of the end of slavery and the end of the Civil War.
National Librarian Day
- Celebrating and honoring librarians, who are among the most knowledgeable people you know. Librarians can also help you do research and order new books. So this day is set aside to recognize and celebrate the librarians who make the process of brain-building so much easier when we head to the library.
National Stress Awareness Day
- Are you finding work or school putting on the pressure? Are your kids getting on your nerves? Are there more bills than money at the end of the month? RELAX! Today is an opportunity to recognize there is plenty of stress in your life. But today is also an opportunity to learn, and to do something about the stress... before it drives you crazy.
National Eggs Benedict Day
- The origins are a bit unclear, perhaps because of all the various Benedicts trying to claim the dish as their own idea. The most famous, printed in The New Yorker in 1942, states Lemuel Benedict of Wall Street staggered into the Waldorf Hotel in 1894 and ordered buttered toast with poached eggs, bacon and hollandaise in order to cure his hangover.
Wilbur Wright's Birthday (1867)
- April 16th marks the birthday of American aviator Wilbur Wright. Born in 1867, Wilbur and his brother Orville are renowned for their invention of the first powered aircraft.
Isaac Newton Knighted (1705)
- Sir Isaac Newton is best known for explaining how gravity works. Newton was knighted by Queen Anne and became Sir Isaac in 1705.
