Apple Milkshake Recipe for Kids

By Hemapriya Natesan @MyLittleMoppet

"An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away" is something we've all heard since our school days, mainly courtesy our parents who were desperate to get their children to eat some fruit! And with good reason too, since fruits and vegetables are an integral part of a healthy, balanced diet. Of course, we realize the truth of this much more now that we're parents ourselves!

The general recommendation for kids is to have 5 to 6 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, with each serving being about 1/4 to 1/2 a cup for young children and nearly 1/2 to 1 cup for older kids. However, this is easier said than done and it is quite a challenge for parents to see their kids get even half the recommended servings! As expected, the worry about kids not getting proper nutrition persists, which only increases as they grow older. So, it's best to get them used to a healthy home-cooked diet right from a young age, and this usually begins with making healthier versions of their 'outside' favorites. One such recipe we're featuring today is a simple apple milkshake which will give any juice-bar milkshake a run for its money!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup grated apple
  • 1 medium glass chilled milk
  • Sugar to taste

Method

1. Into a mixer jar, add the grated apple and required amount of sugar. Grind it with little milk to make a smooth paste.

2. Add the remaining milk to the apple paste and blend to a milkshake consistency. Pour into a tall glass immediately and serve with a straw.

Your apple milk shake is ready! If you like, you can full fat milk, but it may be hard for some children to digest. You can also replace sugar with honey or add some powdered cinnamon can be added for extra flavor. In summers, this goes well with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream.

This milkshake takes care of many nutrients like vitamins B,C ,E and K, all of which are readily available in apples. Grinding it all together ensures that the fiber in the pulp is not lost. So go ahead and let your child enjoy a healthy drink while you sit back and smile knowing that your child is eating her fruits and vegetables!
