Apple Green Jacquard Button Cowl

By Lucy @TheThingsWeDO3

Winter season is a perfect time to take your fair isle and jacquard clothes out from the closet. These colorful patterns are my favorite, though they require some advanced knitting skills. For some time I was a bit scared of trying two color knitting, but I stumbled upon a very nice and fairly easy pattern, and decided to give it a try. Here’s a story how I made an Apple green jacquard button cowl.

Materials:

– Apple Green wool ( 100 grams)

– White wool ( 50 grams )

– 2 US size (3 mm) knitting needles ( if you’re a tight or loose knitter use another needle size to achieve the gauge below )

– 2 US size (3 mm) circular knitting needles (29 or 36in length)

– two buttons

Size:

The ready to wear cowl measures 25,5 in/56 cm in length and is 7,5 in/18 cm wide

I have designed it with quite long flaps, so the cowl’s size can easily be adjusted to the neck size by moving the buttons. There no need to make changes in the knitting pattern.

Gauge:

24 sts and 20 rows = 4×4 in or 10×10 cm in stockinette knit.

Abbreviations:

K – Knit
P – Purl
CO – cast on
K2tog – knit two stitches together
YO – yarn over
MC – main color
CC – contrast color

Instructions:

Using main color, CO 43 sts. and knit 5 rows of reverse stockinette stitch (purl in front rows and knit on reverse side ). Slip the first stitch and knit the last stitch.

Using main and contrasting color yarn start knitting according to the chart below in stockinette stitch.

Notes to the chart:

– chart is worked from right to left and bottom to top

– 1st and last stitch form the edge of the knitting and therefore are not shown on the scheme.

The reverse side of the patterns looks like that:

Button holes:

After reaching the length of  18,5 in/47cm knit one row in the following way:

K8, K2tog, YO, K21, K2tog, YO, K8

Continue knitting according to pattern chart until your cowl reaches the length 25,5 in/56 cm. Bind off and weave all ends.

Edging and Buttons:

Using the circular needles pick up stitches along the edges of the cowl and knit 5 rows in reverse stockinette stitch. Bind off and weave all ends.

Sew two buttons and you are done! Your jacquard cowl is ready to wear!

How to wear

1)  Button up the cowl and wear it close to your neck, nice and warm

2) For more severe weather conditions place the neck warmer over your hood. This will make you wind and cold resistant

3) Fold over the cowl and fasten two button holes through one button.
