Apple appears to be working on a “3D mixed-reality world” that sounds similar to a “metaverse.” This is based on current job listings and relevant filings.
More than 30 positions relating to augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) have been advertised on Apple’s careers page since November 1. The IT behemoth is seeking a combination of software and hardware professionals to work primarily in its Technology Development Group (TDG).
TDG is a covert Apple unit that may have existed as early as 2017. They are thought to be working on AR and VR technology. Apple has never officially stated that such a device is in the works, but most individuals in the IT world are aware of it.
According to its careers page, Apple is currently hiring for more than 150 roles. One August job posting mentions a “3D mixed-reality universe.”
An AR/VR network engineer’s job description includes the following:
“In this role, you will work closely with other developers and build tools and frameworks to enable connected experiences in a 3D mixed-reality world.”
Digitimes on November 9, unnamed sources, declared that Apple’s AR/VR headset would be manufactured by the Taiwanese electronics company Pegatron. This is the same firm that manufactures Apple’s iPhone 14. The first quarter of 2023 is projected to see the start of mass manufacturing.
According to a Pegatron official, the company “cannot discuss about details regarding a specific customer or product because it is proprietary.”
Apple registered the trademarks Reality One and Reality Pro with the United States Patent & Trademark Office in August (USPTO). The terms “photographic and optical gear and instruments” and “virtual and augmented reality headsets, goggles, and glasses” are used interchangeably.
The documents were submitted under the name Immersive Health Solutions LLC, a Delaware “shell” business. This is a technique that large corporations, such as Apple, frequently employ to conceal their plans for future goods.
According to a check of Delaware’s corporate entities, the corporation was founded on February 11 by The Corporation Trust Company, the world’s largest registered agent service agency. This corporation is used by Apple, Google, Walmart, and Coca-Cola.
The same company filed a trademark application for RealityOS in December 2021. This is said to be Apple’s operating system for its future headset.
Other trademark applications, such as one made by Apple Inc. in China, depict a haptic VR glove that can track each finger’s movement. This demonstrates the company’s interest in a possible metaverse space.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has already stated his thoughts on the metaverse. During a Q1 2022 earnings call in January, Cook remarked on the company’s metaverse chances, “We see a lot of opportunity in this market and are investing accordingly.”
Several news broke in January 2022 claiming that Apple planned to debut the headset at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June, but this did not occur due to several development issues.
