Aphex Twin – Minipops 67 [120.2][source Field Mix]

It takes only about ten second to settle into those unmistakable Aphexian drum patterns and rolling analog bassline – not the often annoying, seizure-provoking clutter of Richard D. James Album – but the beautiful, melodic James heard on Selected Ambient Work 85-92 or tracks like “IZ-US” and “On”, which I much rather give a spin than almost any IDM/EDM from the last decade. Still, I can’t put my finger on how and what, but to a certain degree “minipops 67 [120.2]” – the first Aphex Twin track in 13 years –  seems to draw from nearly every corner of Aphex Twin’s many shapes and forms. Not unlike what Boards Of Canada did last year, James adds sheets of his career-long work into these five minutes that might not sound entirely fresh, nor entirely familiar, yet highly vital.
