Anna Paquin on Closing Doors for Sookie and Family Relations

This year True Blood is going to focus on identity and on character development, but none will be more affected than Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin).  Sookie has had to let go of her first love Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), she’s struggled with her feelings for Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) and there was that “almost” romance with Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello).  All this turmoil in her love life has been going on while her life has been in constant danger and this season the danger seems to be closer than ever.  Anna spoke to The Wrap recently about Sookie being forced to close some doors on her love life, Sookie and Jason meeting their grandfather Niall (Rutger Hauer), and Sookie’s new relationship with fellow fairy Ben Flynn (Rob Kazinsky).

While most True Blood fans have their opinions on who Sookie should be with, Paquin says that it was time Sookie learned from her mistakes and closed some of the doors to her past – literally in the case of Eric:

“In the case of both Bill and Eric, they’re people that she legitimately has incredibly strong feelings for, and it’s really quite painful to realize that you actually need to walk away.  There can also be something very empowering about that.”

While Sookie and Jason have been on their own for some time now, they now have their grandfather Niall in the picture and he has arrived in time to help keep Sookie safe from Warlow.  Paquin doesn’t reveal much information, as is the case with most of the cast on the show, but she does say that Sookie and Jason take a certain comfort from having someone there on their side.

You know the saying when one door closes another one opens… Well just as Sookie has put Eric and Bill in her past she appears to have met a new love interest.  Sookie and Ben have a lot in common and Paquin reveals that this commonality is one thing that attracts them:

Well, she’s never been with another faerie. She’s always been with other supernatural creatures that ultimately they’re different species end up being problematic in various ways. This is the first one of her own kind that she’s ever been with or met. The first time she ever hears or sees him she’s kind of like, “Oh, God, no! Got to keep walking, got to go to work. Not again.” But there is something actually alluring about feeling like maybe this person might actually understand you. There’s definitely potential there.

Be sure to tune in to True Blood every Sunday night on HBO to see how Sookie’s love life, and family life play out this season.
