Following her last single, “Orlok” Anna Meredith gives us another glimpse into her upcoming Jet Black Raider EP with “Bubble Gun”. The main musical materials are vaguely pizzicato string sounding samples and a vintage drum machine. By using overlapping phrases of different lengths, a favorite trick of hers, Meredith creates a web of musical motifs which never quite line up. At first one might think that she is eschewing her classical training altogether but through trying to follow one line at a time one realizes the intricacy of the textures and how the methodically created counterpoint contains and intuitive beauty. Jet Black Raider is out August 19 via Moshi Moshi.
