Anime Review : Tales of Zestiria The X

Tales of Zestiria The X is an anime adaptation from a game titled Tales of Zestiria from Tales Series. The anime was first released in summer 2016. This is an action adventure and fantasy anime about a hero who cast away calamity from this world.

The story is about a man named Sorey who grew up among spiritual beings called ‘seraphim’. Sorey believes that mankind and seraphim can live in coexistence but to realize his dream he should embarks a journey as a Shepherd, a hero who cast away calamity from the world, with his seraphim and human companions.

Tales of Zestiria The X is an entertaining anime, it is more entertaining than what it seems to be. While the story itself may not suit popular taste and kinda ordinary, but it is still a good fantasy series. It has quite memorable world and casts.

The anime has some terms that is important to understand such as ‘Shepherd’ and ‘seraphim’, these are important because they have a big impact to understand more about the story. The pace of the story also quite dynamic, sometimes it has fast pace and sometimes it is calm. The pace is well crafted although some plots are quite predictable.

The fantasy setting also is injected with deep history setting. So the background story can be easily understood, and even sometimes the anime shows some scenes from the time before Sorey became Shepherd.

Speaking of the world, Tales of Zestiria The X offers plenty time of world building based on its story and theme. Of course, in case of fantasy genre, the world building has its own importance. From Seraphims to the malevolence, from towns to kingdom, and from princess to dragons, they all are well introduced so the viewers won’t be left stranded with confusion.

In terms of the story and world building, the show seems to hit the right spots and able to stretch and grow its story from the beginning all the way through. Well, the world of this anime is somehow memorable though.

The characters of this anime is pretty generic and pure, they do not look very special as the characters of fantasy anime but they do have their own unique traits. The main character, Sorey, is not very appealing because he is a very pure hearted  and idealist protagonist that make him sometimes quite annoying.

Mikleo the water seraphim, Alisha the princess, and Edna the fire seraphim have better appeals for me. They are more unique and more appealing, most of times they are more visible than Sorey the main character.

Sorey’s Final Form

This anime is an adventure action anime in a fantasy world that is based on J-RPG (Role Playing Games). Although the story is pretty interesting and enjoyable but there is not much fighting. It has less fighting scenes than usual fantasy action anime. And some of the fighting scenes that are exist also short of expectation and unmemorable.

Lack of fighting scenes is the most important part that make this anime decent. If it has more fighting scenes that are more well-crafted, this anime will be epic and far more interesting. The animation visual of this anime is also pretty decent.

Although the main concept of the story is kinda boring, a hero who is trying to save the world by purifies evil not by eliminating them, but the story is enjoyable and more interesting than what it seems to be.

I’ve watch this anime twice but still pretty enjoyable and fun. Tales of Zestiria The X is kinda a decent anime that you are able to enjoy easily althought it is not memorable. The anime has some flaws but they are not major, so it is worth to try.
