Anime Review: Goblin Slayer

Posted on the 27 July 2019 by Radzkid

Goblin Slayer is an action, adventure, and fantasy anime. The story revolves around a warrior with a nickname Goblin Slayer in an alternative midieval world where people become heroes (adventurer) to fight many kind of monsters.

Among all adventurer there is one man, his name is Goblin Slayer, he only care about killing goblins and not other monsters. His obsession with goblin started when he was a child when he saw his village and his family destroyed by the attack of goblin troupes.

Just like any other adventure anime, on his mission to slay goblins, he meet some friends that will acccompany him on his mission. The anime is fun and also dynamic. The story has a fast pace although sometimes in the early story there are some repetitive sequences.

The anime started with a Porcelain-ranked adventurer, the 15-year-old Priestess joins a band of young, enthusiastic rookies to investigate a tribe of goblins responsible for the disappearance of several village women. Unprepared and inexperienced, the group soon faces its inevitable demise from an ambush while exploring a cave. With no one else left standing, the terrified Priestess accepts her fate until the Goblin Slayer unexpectedly appears to not only rescue her with little effort, but destroy the entire goblin nest.

And then the priestess join Goblin Slayer on his mission, followed by an archer elf, a wizard lizard-man, and also a wizard dwarf.

The uniqueness of Goblin Slayer comes from its beautiful vibrant colors of the real world, also on the other hand there is dark, bloodcurdling atmosphere. The contrast exemplifies the both side of life itself and how transient bliss can be supplanted by a life-long despair, due to circumstances that are beyond our control.

The Goblin Slayer experienced a fate worse than death, having witnessed the gang rape and eventual death of his sister. Instead of acquiescing to his own fears, the Goblin Slayer hardened his resolve, choosing to never forgive the creatures that robbed him of his remaining family and his innocence.

Despite his simple goal, the Goblin Slayer utilizes various of techniques to kill goblins and keep the viewer entertained, including: curb-stomping goblin teeth against jagged rocks, destroying goblin face’s with his knuckles, splattering goblin brain across cave walls, shooting arrows through goblin eyeballs, burning goblin with torches, and performing a mass genocide of all goblins.

Essentially, simply said, Goblin Slayer is the Japanese animation equivalent of Batman set in a medieval world. But instead of breaking bones and scaring his enemy psychologically, he just straight up murders those goblins.

One lack of this anime is the fast pace of the ending arc, where goblins will attack Goblin Slayer’s village. The arc is too short for a final battle with only less than 2 full-episodes. But luckily, the anime will continue to the second season.

Goblin Slayer is really about. Killing, slicing, dicing, burning, piercing, bludgeoning, ripping, and tearing goblins apart. The violence is brutal and extremely gory. Our main protagonist, Goblin Slayer, will use any means necessary to kill as many goblins as possible. During the first episode, he kills goblins by himself, while keeping count, exactly 22 goblins. That’s a lot of damage. But, to our main protagonist the only good goblin is a dead goblin.
