I'm tired of hearing that politicians are afraid to close the loopholes on the background check law for gun buyers -- that they think they couldn't be re-elected if they close those loopholes. Excuse my language, but that is pure bullshit!
It is not only political cowardice, but political cowardice that has no basis in reality. The truth is that there would be no backlash against any politician who voted to require a background check for all gun buyers (including at gun shows, on the internet, and for private sales between individuals).
About 89% of all registered voters say they would support closing those loopholes. And a similar overwhelming percentage exists among both genders, all age groups, all income levels, all races and ethnicities, those in urban-suburban-rural areas, all regions of the country, and all political persuasions (including Republicans).
Americans want our background check laws fixed. They think its ridiculous that people who are known to be dangerous can buy any kind of gun they want without a background check being done (which occurs in about 40% of gun sales each year).
This would not be a violation of the Second Amendment, and it would not infringe on the right of honest Americans to buy and own a gun. It is the very least we could do to save thousands of American lives each year, and it should be done without any further hesitation. Not doing this is immoral and inexcusable.
The chart above reflects results in a new Politico / Morning Consult Poll -- done between March 15th and 19th of a random national sample of 1,994 registered voters, with a margin of error of 2 points.
