So this is crazy. By Amazon the new Echo Show 10 rotates on its base to follow you around the room. The onboard camera is able to recognize a person and turn to follow them, essentially taking the people-tracking feature found on the Facebook portal and Google's Nest Hub Max to the next, more creepy lever.
Amazon immediately points out, from a privacy point of view, that the device does not identify people individually, as much as it only recognizes the general shape of a person and turns in such a way as to always keep the display facing them. I'm not sure how it works with multiple people, and all, but it will be interesting to see in person. Also, quite frankly, I wonder how useful a feature is ultimately, and if that extra level of monitoring is worth it.
As the name suggests, there is a 10-inch HD touch display on board. It is paired with a file. 13 megapixel camera and 2.1 sound system. Like the new Echo, it has Zigbee functionality built in, so the device doubles as a smart home hub.
Over the past few months Amazon has added a ton of third-party software features to the Show, and the list now includes Zoom, Skype, and, coincidentally, Netflix. These are all big wins in the era of work from home, but especially Netflix, since the show took a hit when Google removed YouTube support from Echo devices.
The Echo Show 10 costs $ 250. That's pretty expensive, as far as these smart screens are concerned. I suspect a lot of what you're paying for here is that expensive mechanism to follow you as you move - for many, that addition is probably not worth the premium.
